On Saturday 5th of March 2016, Dark-Cide will celebrate it’s 15th Birthday – an amazing achievement, especially for a clubnight such as ours. Sadly, it will also be our last event too.
There’s many reason why (I’ve tried several times to write them up, but it just sprawls on for about 5000+ words), but perhaps the simplest but still honest way to explain it is, the time is right for us to bring this wonderful event to a close . Sadly, all clubnights come to an end, and we think our 15th Birthday is perhaps the best milestone for us to finish off, and hopefully end on a bit of a high.
I’ve agonised for a huge amount of time about this – as these 15 years of Dark-Cide has been a huge part of my life, but I think the time is right for us to power down, enter the stasis chamber, and send Dark-Cide on her way into the ether.
Kristen, my DJ buddy all the way through this dark decade and a half also feels the same way and we’re hoping you can join us for one last event to give DC a memorable and fitting send off.
We’ve had some amazing party nights and in so many Preston venues over these long and winding years with so many ups (and some pretty tricky downs!) – starting with that first event in the upstairs room above The Golden Cross, to Strettles, then to Blowing Wild, then briefly to the 12 Bar, then back to Strettles when it changed to Bitter Suite, Mercury Flux, then to The Venue (which then became CODA), and then onto our longest ever residency and tbh our spiritual home and our best ever years – 53 Degrees – where we’ve had some of our very best nights and managed to put on a pretty impressive range of bands, including:
Sigue Sigue Sputnik Electronic
The Birthday Massacre
Zombina & The Skeletones
Vince Ripper & The Rodent Show
Squid (managed to squeeze them in just about!)
and many others – and tbh though some were more attended than others (and I lost loads on nearly all of them!), I think all were very good gigs – one’s I’m very proud of – and glad to say there was some absolutely incredible ones in there too.
None of these gigs and club events we could have done without the loyal and wonderful support from all of you over the years. Many of you have been coming from all over the region (and even further in some cases!) and we’ve been so lucky to have had such a loyal bunch of people come along and support what we do. It’s been incredible to put on, and that we’ve managed 15 years is pretty much all down to you coming along and it’s been really appreciated.
We’d like to say a huge thanks to everyone who’s come along in those 15 years (and especially to those you have been coming for all those years!) and also to the venues and 53 Degrees in particular and the fabulous staff over the years – they’ve been amazing to work with and they’ve worked amazingly hard (having seen behind the scenes it’s been incredible what they’ve done for us) and were the main reason those gigs and events looked and sounded as good as they did, and through some very tough and challenging times (such as the whole threat of closure back in 2014).
Will this be the end of Dark-Cide? As a regular event sadly yes. Both myself and Kristen will continue to DJ on our various (many!) styles and genres in our own ways, and tbh you might see us play ‘Dark-Cide’ type sets as guests at other events and festivals etc – but as a regular clubnight our Dark-Cide 15th Birthday – Sat 5th March – will be our finale.
But it’s not all sad news. We guess in a few years there’s the possibility we may hopefully come back for the occasional re-union event, and there’s the outside possibility Dark-Cide will put on a live show or two, but as a regular event we feel it’s time to bring things to a close and say farewell to what has been an *Amazing* event to be a part of, putting on some fabulous event in a pretty small city (I still think of Preston as ‘Town’!) playing a very wonderful but niche wide range of music, to some glorious and wonderful people.
And while we still love the music and are now bringing our clubnight to a close, there’s still many other excellent similar clubnights/events and promoters we def recommend – clubnights such as Bunker13 [Leeds/Whitby], Dark Side of the Lune[Lancaster], Indie80s [Preston], in Manchester there’s ArA, Black Planet, Back From Hell, Sin City, Satan’s Hollow, Darklands [York], Revolution [Sheffield Corporation], Carpe Noctumn [Bradford], Planet X [Liverpool], Nightmare [Nottingham] and I think Lancaster’s Ritual Noise still do occasional shows and events. And for more dance flavoured alt events there’s Sinistry [London], Torture Garden[London], Illuminaughty [Manchester] and not forgetting the longest running alt event in the UK – Slimelight every weekend down in London.
Then theres the long running alternative festivals such as Whitby and Bradford InFest, and also Resistanz in Sheffield (though they also will be having their last event in March on the Easter weekend) and things like Rebellion Punk Festival in Blackpool and The Caveman Bash in Preston/Salmesbury.
And there’s also promoters such as Flag and Manchester’s AnalogueTrash (now a record label and still doing occasional events and lot of live gigs) and over in Newcastle Kev Morris is still putting on loads of gigs and clubnights with RFTK Promotions plus a whole lot more (sorry if I’ve missed any other off – know there’s a fair few fabulous events all over the country!)
And still in Preston there’s live music events at The Continental, The Ferret and other places, and of course 53 Degrees are thankfully still hosting occasional live shows – and given they’ve brought us Gary Numan (twice!) and New Model Army, hopefully some similar shows will come along in the future.
So there’s still a good amount of excellent events out there for this wonderful range of music we’ve been playing and know so many of you also go to some of those events too as well as come to Dark-Cide.
But yes though for us at Dark-Cide, as a regular event at 53 Degrees in Preston – our home – sadly Sat 5th March – this is our last one.
Hope you can come along for our Farewell and celebrate – and cheers so much to each and every one of you who’ve come along and partied with us in those 15 years xx
